A survey by an in-flight connectivity provider, Aeromobile has revealed that 78 per cent of tourists use their mobile phone abroad, for various reasons. aeromobile

The survey was carried out using the tool OnePoll and showed SMS texting to be the most popular mobile phone service-both home and abroad. Of the people who responded to the survey, 41 per cent used SMS daily at home with 26 per cent using it on holiday.

Social media is also very popular with around one in three (29 per cent) active users at home, with one in five respondents tweeting, Instagramming or using Facebook whilst away. Instant messaging is used by one in three people at home, compared to 21 per cent abroad.

Some people are incapable of leaving their work at home when they go on holiday according to the survey- whilst one in five access work emails at home using their phone, almost half of these do so abroad. Almost 20% of travellers also surf the net using their phone whilst abroad. email abroad

Calling is the only service that falls drastically whilst people are abroad. 36 per cent of people make calls on a daily basis at home, compared to 16 per cent on holiday. Voice calls are notably replaced with instant messaging when abroad.

The results of the survey clearly showed that people like to stay connected on holiday, even whilst in flight. Aeromobile figures show a 50 per cent increase of users connecting to their inflight network, compared to 2014.

“It’s interesting to see how connected holidaymakers are and these statistics reflect what we’re seeing in the air. People still want to use their phones to keep in touch with what’s going on at home, even at 30,000ft. Inflight connectivity is used for all sorts, from a quick WhatsApp message to sending important work emails or listening to voicemail”, said Kevin Rogers, CEO of AeroMobile.
