About Flamingo Land
Flamingo Land is located in North Yorkshire, England. It was established back in 1959 when businessman Edward Hick purchased the land of a bankrupt country club to turn it into a zoo. A flamingo colony was the first type of animal to be housed on the site. There was a small funfair on the land throughout the 1960’s and in 1970 the amusement park became a permanent fixture. In 1963 the park was home to the UK’s first captive dolphins, and this meant that Flamingo Land was the first place in Europe to combine an amusement park with a zoo. However, the park only became known as Flamingo Land in 1974 after it underwent a major revamp, with the emphasis being placed on the park as a day out destination. The owners, Scotia Leisure sold the site to Robert Gibb, a former employee, in 1978. He put together a plan to develop Flamingo Land as a national attraction, in 1991, Gibb developed the Bullet and Thunder Mountain rides.
Gibb later died in 1995, however, his three children now run and maintain the park and zoo.
