We’ve all looked at the paparazzi photos of Victoria Beckham and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley stylishly strutting through the airport, and wondered how on earth they look so good after a long flight. However, whilst stilettos and floppy hats may look good, they’re very impractical when it comes to getting through airport security. We’ve compiled a guide to what not to wear to the airport, with some of our favourite picks for what you should wear.
What not to wear
- Maxi dress/skirt: If you wear that lovely floaty maxi dress, you can fairly guarantee an officer will want to check you’re not hiding anything underneath!
- Bobby pins: Multiple bobby pins in your hair will set off the detectors.
- Cargo pants/shorts: With so many pockets, you’re almost guaranteed to have forgotten at least one item.
- Jewellery: Put your jewellery on after security. If you’re lucky enough to own a Cartier love bracelet (the one that can only be removed with a screwdriver), don’t wear this through the detector as you will get stopped!
- Belt: If your jeans need a belt, wear a different pair! You don’t want a queue of annoyed people behind you as you fumble around trying to undo your belt.
- Boots/gladiator sandals- Again, they take time to remove! So just stick with a pair of simple, slip on flats.
- Underwired bras- Occasionally, the wire in your bra can set the detector off.
What to wear:
One word: layers! When you travel, the temperature changes so often. Freezing cold departure location, stuffy airport, chilly aeroplane, warm final destination. You always want to be comfortable too, particularly on early morning or long flights. Think girlfriend fit jeans, flats you can remove easily and an oversized scarf to double up as a blanket.
