If you’re tired of fighting your way through crowds on your ‘relaxing’ summer holiday, it’s time to head off the beaten track. There are plenty of destinations across the world where you can find sun drenched beaches, culture and activities, without having to share it with thousands of other people. Here are some of the best alternative places to spend your precious time away.

Malaga, Spain

malaga

Malaga is the birthplace of the famous Picasso and when you visit, it’s easy to see where his inspiration came from. It’s a city of culture, with plenty of museums, monuments and even an old fort to explore. That is, of course, if you can drag yourself away from the area’s famous beaches.

Local’s tip: Lots of places in Malaga don’t accept cards, so make sure you bring cash.

How to get there: Three hour flight from the UK with Ryanair.

Pula, Croatia

pula

When you think of a holiday to Croatia, most people go to Dubrovnik. However, Pula is a destination not to be missed. The summers are tame, the sea is refreshing and the cost of living is low. There are also plenty of Roman buildings to explore, including a well preserved amphitheatre.

Local’s tip: Hire a car and explore the surrounding charming villages.

How to get there: You may have to fly into Zagreb with British Airways.

Santa Eulalia, Ibiza

santa eulalia

If you’re looking for a quieter holiday, Santa Eulalia is perfect. It’s often renowned as the gastronomic centre of the island, with great places to eat. It’s also one of the areas of Ibiza that has traditional bars and restaurants with friendly locals; so friendly that you’ll be on first name basis in no time.

Local’s tip: The resort is only a 20 minute drive away from Ibiza town, which shouldn’t be missed.

How to get there: Lots of budget airlines have flights to Ibiza, including Easyjet.

Gozo, Malta

gozo

Gozo is a much quieter alternative to its sister island of Malta. If you like diving, you won’t find better in the Med. The island is also home to some of the oldest religious structures in the world. Rickety buses line the roads, making public transport an exciting way to get around.

Local’s tip: Grapes wine bar serves perfect Maltese wine and is ideal for people watching.

How to get there: Fly to Malta and make the short trip across.

Algarve, Portugal

Regularly rated as one of the most affordable places to go on holiday, the Algarve is pretty popular. However, there are areas where you can get off the beaten track. Whether you’re looking for nightlife, your own perfect beach or great food, it’s all here somewhere.

Local’s tip: O Jorges in Albufeira has the best Portugese piri piri chicken.

How to get there: Fly with Monarch.

Dolomites, Italy

dolomites

The Dolomites is a mountain range in the Italian Alps, but it’s severely underrated as a summer destination. If you like activity, it’s perfect for hiking and biking. The Austrian influence of the area reigns supreme; think yodeling and yoghurt for breakfast. A truly unique holiday experience.

Local’s tip: Most places reopen in June.

How to get there: Rent a car to get around. You can fly to Venice and drive to the Dolomites in a few hours.
