As AirBnB has over two million listings, the competition between hosts can be fierce to become the most popular on the site. However, the most popular rental has been revealed: a tiny cabin in the woods of California.

The ‘geodesic dome loft’ can be found in Aptos, California and has been given the title of the most frequently booked listing on the website. The loft was originally listed just 11 months after AirBnB was founded and since then, the owners’ Kitty and Michael have become superhosts. If you wish to book a stay in this unusual dome, you’ll have to book months in advance. Last year, the property was empty for just three nights. It has a five star rating on AirBnB, with 88% of the guests who stay giving it full marks. The dome can fit three people inside and will cost $110 per night plus cleaning fees and taxes.

The owners said that many people have ‘fantasies’ about staying in a dome and that many of their guests come to get away from crowds and noise. The listing states that the dome is next to ten acres of land so that you can ‘get to enjoy nature’ by hiking, visiting the beach or watching the hummingbirds.

A spokesperson for AirBnB said that the mushroom dome is a ‘terrific example’ of some of the unusual listings on the AirBnB website. The spokesperson added that like many superhosts on the site, the owners of the cabin were committed to providing ‘extraordinary hospitality’.

Originally, the mushroom dome was 100 feet in order to comply with local legislation and not require a permit. However, whilst the cabin has moved and expanded over the years, it hasn’t lost the original rustic vibe. The listing even says that the cabin is not as wide as it looks. If you stay, you’ll have to climb a ladder to reach the double bed and use a composting toilet.

If you’re hoping to stay at the dome and it’s already booked up for your date, fear not. Kitty and Michael have just built a studio on the land called the Hummingbird Hangout and they’re hoping to build a treehouse at some point in the future. On site, there is a little farm with goats and chickens. In the lodge itself, there is free wifi and a TV with a DVD player. The garden is home to around 250-300 hummingbirds; a truly spectacular sight.

Though there are more properties which are regularly ‘wish-listed’ on AirBnB, the Mushroom Dome Cabin is the most popular in terms of bookings.
